Audi Cvt

Audi Continuous Variable Transmission - YouTube A continuously variable transmission (CVT) (also known as a single-speed transmission, stepless transmission, variable pulley transmission, or, in. Description Genuine OEM transmission filter. The problematic CVT transmission can cause headaches if not maintained properly. This Genuine OEM transmission filter will filter out all harmful deposits to make sure your transmission is operating smoothly.

Audi has used two different types of automatic gearboxes in their cars, the Multitronic CVT (Continuous Variable Transmission) and the S-Tronic Dual Clutch, and even though Audi has chosen to discontinue the CVT transmission for upcoming models, there are plenty of Audis that use the CVT transmission still on the market, both new and used. If you are trying to decide which Audi transmission is better for you, let’s look at how each transmission works.

CVT Transmissions

A CVT transmission has no fixed gears, which means there are notraditional gears that run from first to sixth but rather there are two pulleysconnected to each other by a belt. One pulley is connected to the car’s engine, and the other pulley is connected to the transmission and wheels. The pulleysare designed in a way that they appear to be changing size infinitely, fromsmall to large. This is achieved by having each pulley shaped like a cone.

When taking off, the belt at the pulley connected to the engine isat the narrowest end on the cone, and at the pulley connected to thetransmission is at the widest end of the cone. As you gain speed, and wouldtraditionally change to sixth gear, or your cars highest gear, the belt shiftsto the widest end of the cone for the pulley connected to the engine, and thepulley connected to the transmission will shift the belt to the narrowest endof the cone.

Benefits of a CVT Transmission

  • The car can adjust to the best rev-range for any given situation
  • Since there is no need to change gears, the drive feels continuousand smooth
  • Since the car can quickly adjust to the best rev-range, economy isimproved

Disadvantage of a CVT Transmission

  • The car will quickly to a rev point and stay at that point whilethe car is accelerating, which many drivers describe as feeling like having aclutch slip
  • You lose the immediate throttle response that drivers are used to,and can make gaining speed to overtake a little more difficult

Dual Clutch Transmission

A dual clutch transmission, as I’m sure you’ve already guessed, has two clutches to manage gears. Clutch A is used on odd numbered gears –first, third, fifth and seventh. Clutch B is used on even numbered gears –second, fourth and sixth. The two clutches are designed to work with each otherto make changes between gears smoother and quicker by reducing the time theclutch takes to move from gear to gear.

When you start your car and move it from park to neutral, clutch Aprepares first gear and clutch B prepares second gear. When you shift to drive,Clutch A moves first gear into position, and as you begin accelerating, clutchB begins to spin second gear to match the rotational speed of the first gear. When it’s time to gear up, clutch A moves first gear out of position, andclutch B moves second gear into position making the change over from first tosecond instantaneous. Once second gear is in position, clutch A picks up thirdgear, and spins it to match the rotational speed of the second gear, and createthe same effect for the change from first to second for second to third. Thisprocess repeats through all the gear changes. Free office software for mac.

Benefits of a Dual Clutch Transmission

  • Acceleration is improved.
  • Gear changes are smoother than traditional automatics
  • Throttle response is maintained from manual versions

Disadvantages of a Dual Clutch Transmission

  • There is no improvement on downshift time from traditionalautomatics
  • Higher maintenance costs
  • Mechatronics unit can gobad leading to expensive repairs

Whether you decide on a dual clutch transmission or a CVTtransmission, you can rest your mind in knowing Audi is supplying you with thebest transmission for your needs. Automatic Transmission problem of the 2002 Audi A4 1

2002 Audi A4 1. 8t, transmission ctv, the car has 75,000 miles everything works in the car with some minor stuff, but the transmission start to jerk when stop in a red light, is almost uncontrolable, it want to move the foward, so I have to press the brake hard so it dosent move. It starts to get dangerus to drive in that kind of condition. This is the second Audi I own and that’s a shame that so good quality car has this kind of problem and the dealers and Audi USA don’t do anything about it. You spend 30 thousand of dollars and you have to throw your car away because the fix cost more than what your car is worth.

Automatic Transmission problem of the 2006 Audi A4 2

Passing on freeway hill. Pressed accelerator to shift auto transmission into lower passing gear. Result was as if I'd shifted into neutral. With accelerator planted firmly to the firewall the rpms would not go above 4k. Tried every possible combo (over the course of a 50 mile freeway trip) with auto trans selector and the car would not accelerate except in the 'drive' mode. No warning lights were lit. Clearly, when the 'drive' mode automatically selected a lower gear, it was as if I'd shifted into neutral. After the car sat for a bit, there was not problem. This is not car to be trusted. Another cute trick: now and then it locks all the doors after I've exited the car and left the engine running, which should be impossible on this vehicle. I will never again trust this car to safely pass another. Dealer indicates I could bring the car in, but that's 200 miles each way. . . No certainty of diagnosis.

Automatic Transmission problem of the 2009 Audi A4 3

Parked in an incline, I attempted to back out of a drive way. I placed my foot on the brake and placed the car in reverse and removed my foot from the brake. The vehicle went forward as if in neutral with no resistance at all. I stepped on the brake quickly to prevent from going through the garage door. Although I depressed the accelerator the car was not moving in reverse. I had to get the engine rpm up fairly high to get the car to move at all. It was like I had the parking brake on but if I let up on the accelerator, the car would again roll forward. When the car reached the top of the drive, it quickly grabbed and accelerated. I stepped on the brake quickly but not before I hit a retaining wall behind me. This type of hesitation has also been experienced when in drive. Depressing the accelerator does not produce immediate results. Then starts to increase rpm's an then the car lunges forward. I have returned it to the Audi dealer a few months ago for this exact problem. When the service man moved my car he immediately noticed the condition but it was returned to me 'working as designed'. For the next 2-3 months, the transmission was as responsive as any other auto but this has changed back to the way it was. Updated ivoq 10/26/10.

Automatic Transmission problem of the 2003 Audi A4 4

It would seem that I have two of the issues I've seen here with my 2003 Audi A4 convertible. I have owned it since 2008 and have already replaced the transmission module twice. As described by others, it wouldn't engage reverse, or go into standard mode. . . Blinking dash lights, etc. . . The other common issue is my rear window. It is holding on by less that two inches of glue. The rest just hangs on by the headliner. This has resulted in gallons of water entering my car during rain storms. Not to mention the vibrations while driving with the top up.

Automatic Transmission problem of the 2010 Audi A4 5

I have a 2010 Audi A4 with the 'multitronic' cvt transmission. When the vehicle is on an incline, the car rolls-back (or forward) when in drive, much like a car with a manual transmission. I have taken the car in for service and was told that this behavior is 'normal' and functioning 'as designed. 'while this has not caused an accident, this sort of behavior has the potential to cause collisions with the car behind (or in front) when on an incline, grade, hill, parking garage, parking lot, etc. This behavior has cause frightening situations in which I've had to slam on the brakes for fear of hitting the car behind (or in front) of me. This has also caused the driver of the other vehicle to honk in fear of getting hit. I have not observed similar behavior in vehicles with traditional manual or automatic transmissions. This behavior seems to be limited to Audis with cvt transmissions. I have been able to reproduce the same behavior on a friend's 2009 Audi A4 with the same transmission.

Automatic Transmission problem of the 2002 Audi A4 6

I have an 2002 Audi a-4 with a constant variable transmission. I have had hesitation problems on and off since 2002. Several repairs have been made and the dealer has never addressed the transmission hesitation. Since I don't drive the car very often, the transmission is finally skipping. The dealer indicates the car most likely is the beginning to show signs of the need for a new transmission. I generally keep my cars over 10 years and service them like a baby. This is disheartening, since the repairs would be more than the car is worth. My daughter had similar problems with her vs passat and after pouring money into it, problems continued. I am very disapointed and will not buy again.

Automatic Transmission problem of the 2003 Audi A4 8

Audi-a4-sedan-cvt transmission. Slipping gear while vehicle is moving and beginning drive from stoplight. Safety concern for family. History of a problem and no recall by Audi. How can there be no recall.

Automatic Transmission problem of the 2010 Audi A4 9

The 2010 Audi A4 2. 0t which I leased lunges forward every time it is down shifted in triptronic mode (manually shifting the automatic transmission). Today, I reported the defect to the service writer scott summerfield at mcdonald Audi in littleton CO and he told me he was aware of it and that he thought Audi might be working on a 'fix' for it. I think you should compel Audi to replace the transmissions because the lunging is a potentially life threatening defect. The manual shifting mode of the automatic transmission is used mainly on unsafe steep mountain roads to avoid riding the brake on a downhill grade and to acquire greater control of the vehicle on slippery terrain where the possibility of a fatal accident such as going over a cliff is great.

Automatic Transmission problem of the 2003 Audi A4 10

I have a 2003 A4 convertible Audi. I have been researching problems I have been experiencing, and have found that many people are having the same transmission issues. The problem is in the transmission control unit. The range switch telling the transmission which gear to go into goes out. The dangerous symptoms include an inability to go into reverse, the car not accelerating when the gas is pressed and then lunging forward. When the car slows to a stop, it often doesn't shift down and the car lunges forward before killing the engine. There have been numerous reports of this problem, and Audi has been unwilling to admit fault in the manufacturing, and/or provide a solution. The fix has come at a costly $8k new transmission.

Automatic Transmission problem of the 2006 Audi A4 11

I have a 2006 Audi A4, automatic-triptonic transmission, 2. 0 turbo and I am the second owner of the vehicle. The previous owner purchased the car in oct 2005 and in late 2006, the transmission broke down and Audi had repaired it at no charge at an Audi service center. I bought the car on oct 2007 and by mid-2008, the vehicle stalled and jolted in a very busy parking lot with my 2 young children in the back. My husband decided to drop us off and tried to drive the car home because he knew there was something seriously wrong with the car as it jolted and loud popping mechanical sounds began emitting from the front. He was near our house when the car gave up and would no longer accelerate. Imagine if this would have happened on the freeway! absolutely horrendous that Audi would only recall the newer cars when obviously previous models have the same type of gearbox in question. I will be getting the car fixed and definitely will be trading the car in to get a non vw/Audi car. I honestly wish I could just tell them to trash it because I wouldn't want anyone driving this car, even after I've fixed it. If it happened once, it may happen again.

Automatic Transmission problem of the 2003 Audi A4 12

I own a 03 Audia4 1. 8t cabriolet. For the pass two years I have to repair the transmission twice- the car could not move, the gears weren't switching. Audi USA are aware of this issue and still there is not a recall for that. Second and bigger issue is the rear window which is separating from the convertible top. It is dangerous as the window can fly away while I drive the car with a higher speed on the highway and hit the cars behind me. Also very common problem for this model cars.

Automatic Transmission problem of the 2005 Audi A4 13

I own a 2005 Audi A4. Three months out of warranty and with the odometer at 24,616, the transmission control unit on my car started signaling a fault. I took the car to the dealership, boardwalk Audi in plano, texas, and was told that the unit was about to go out and that the car could just stop while I was driving down the freeway. The repair cost would be $1490 and it would take up to two weeks to get the tcu because of back orders. If fact, one of the first things the service advisor told me was that they have had to order several of these parts (note - at this one dealership) and that it has taken at least a week to get them in. I also spoke with the service supervisor and service manager and they agreed to pay for 50% of the repairs. Both remarked that it was taking two or sometimes three weeks to get the part because of back orders. It seems like, with that level of incidents, this should be investigated. This car should not be having that type of failure with less than 25,000 miles. Ii reported it to Audi America who responded with complete indifference.

Automatic Transmission problem of the 2004 Audi A4 14

At around 55,000 miles, warranty over at 50,000, my friend (he owns a foreign auto repair shop in seattle) noticed that my transmission was a little jumpy. It might have been doing this earlier but I did not notice it because my wife was driving the car and they never know anything is wrong with the car until it falls part. My nearest authorized dealership was 45 minutes away and I need the vehicle for deliveries and pickups in my business so I waited until it got worse. At approx 65,000 miles I took it to a local dealer ($99) who stated that my transmission was going to fail to the tune of $ 6500. I called Audi, they said that they could not do anything until I see an authorized dealer. That cost me $ 115 to tell me the same thing and they were going to charge me $ 8500. I asked why it is failing so early, he could not give me an answer. It's 'one' of those things! asked if there was anything I could have done to prevent it and he said 'no'. My buddy said drive it till it drops, it has 74,000 miles now, it's grinding real bad now and I do not have the $ 6000 to fix it, need some relief especially since others are having the same problem. I have owned over 20 cars in my life and I have never had a transmission problem. This is my first and last german made automobile. I need help!.

Automatic Transmission problem of the 2006 Audi A4 15

Extreme vibrations are occurring while vehicle is stopped and in gear. This problem has existed since I drove it off the lot new. It now has only 40,000 miles. The vibration levels vary and can fluctuate. When vibrations are high the vibration is nauseating occurs every day. Dealer states Audi will not deal with this problem as it may require replacement of the automatic transmission.

Automatic Transmission problem of the 2006 Audi A4 16

I was driving my 2006 Audi A4 from pittsburgh to va Monday 1/18/09. Approx 2 hrs into the drive, while descending a hill on interstate 70 I went to brake to slow down and the car began to accelerate instead. I had been driving in the 6th gear of the tiptronic mode. So I threw it over to drive mode instead thinking maybe something wrong with the other mode. It continued to accelerate as I applied the brake I could hear the acceleration continuing and when removing my foot from brake the car took off until I hit brake again. Panicked I tried to get over from the passing lane to the side of the road. I had to navigate between a car I almost hit and an 18 wheeler. Once over on side I threw on emergency brake and could still hear and feel car accelerating. I turned off the vehicle to stop it completely. I was scared to death and shaking. I immediately checked the floor to see if something had obstructed the gas area. All mats were in place and nothing appeared unusual. I then checked for my cruise control. I have never used it in this car and actually had to find the lever. Thought maybe I bumped it while using the wipers. The cc is on the other side and no where near anything I would have touched. I called Audi roadside and they towed it to frederick MD. I called Audi customer service the next morning to alert them. They seemed responsive and concerned. The Audi dealership could not find any problems. They said they tried to replicate it. I asked if that meant they drove it at night for 2 hours in 13 degree weather in the 6th gear of tiptronic mode? they said no they conducted computer tests and found nothing. I had to pick up my car that I am now terrified to drive. I am still waiting to hear back from Audi customer service person who now seems to not be returning my calls. This is unacceptable to me & I need to find answers &/or get another vehicle I no longer feel safe in this car. I read similar complaints on the NHTSA site for this car & year.

Automatic Transmission problem of the 2004 Audi A4 17

2004 Audi A4 cvt transmission lurching, rough shifting, and eventual failure of transmission predicted by mechanic, requiring significant costly repairs (thousands of dollars). First owner of the vehicle, which was well maintained. I am told this is a 'common complaint/problem' with Audi's. Internet search yields many similar complaints on cvt transmissions. Called Audi customer service and they are mute on cvt transmissions as an issue! defective cvt transmissions should be recalled and repaired by Audi, not by consumers. Present mechanic contacted other mechanics and, I am told that this is a known issue amongst mechanics? why no recall.

Automatic Transmission problem of the 2005 Audi A4 18

Audi A4 accelerates and decelerates at will. Adobe reader 9 mac free download. Does not go into reverse gear all the time. Then car must be turned off and on to get it into reverse gear. Car at dealership now for repair which is supposed to cost $1500. The integrity of the auto is substantially impaired.

Automatic Transmission problem of the 2003 Audi A4 19

My vehicle is an Audi A4 3. 0. I originally purchased in 6/2003. On multiple occasions, when I have put the car in reverse the car begins to buck/shake violently for several seconds until I press on the brake put the car back into park. I have taken it to the Audi dealership to address this problem on several occasions while it was under warranty and they were unable to diagnose the problem. Most recently, at the beginning of this year. However, last week as I was returning home, smoke began to come out of the engine. I brought it to Audi service and I was told today that my transmission was leaking and was dripping onto my catalytic converter which was the cause for the smoke. However, I am now no longer covered by my warranty. It seems like the cvt transmission on this car is prone for failure after 50,000. They want to take out my transmission and either replace/repair it (if possible). I contacted Audi customer care and they contacted Audi service. They are currently in discussion with regards to the coverage for the repairs. They should have found the problem a while ago when I brought it in several times before.

The contact owns a 2006 Audi A4 cabriolet. The contact stated that while driving 5 mph the vehicle would suddenly shift into limp mode. None of the check engine lights illuminated when the failure occurred. The dealer stated that the vehicle needed transmission fluid. When the dealer added transmission fluid to the vehicle that did not remedy the problem. The contact took the vehicle back to the dealer regarding the limp mode issue and was told that the vehicle was operating normally. The failure mileage was 43,000.

My car intermittently does not move when the vehicle is put in drive. This has only happened so far when the engine is cold. Automatic Transmission problem of the 2004 Audi A4 23

Vehicle is having a problem with the transmission. Owner has leased this vehicle in June 2004. When the vehicle is in reverse, it will not move then suddenly the engine will accelerate and a click and pop sound will be heard and then the vehicle will surge backward. Owner had taken the vehicle to the dealership and they could not duplicate the problem. Instead the transmission was replaced because it was said at that time that they were aware of the problem but could not repair it. Provide further details.

Automatic Transmission problem of the 2003 Audi A4 24

My 2003 Audi A4 3. 0 with cvt transmission, purchased new 2/2004, has 8000 miles on it. During the past 2 weeks (the past 500 miles) I have noted the following problem 4 different times: upon pressing the accelerator while at a complete stop, the transmission seems not to 'engage' and the vehicle does not move. Unfortunately, during 3 of those occasions, my vehicle was on a downward incline and I was attempting to make a right turn into a street with traffic. I therefore coasted into traffic but was unable to accelerate; I was very lucky not to have been hit by the traffic coming from my left. After waiting a few long seconds, the transmission would eventually seem to 'engage', and I would be on my way.

Automatic Transmission problem of the 2002 Audi A4 26

The problem is with the cvt automatic transmission. I guess you would call it hesitation when you accelerate. When we bought the car we lived in a small town that was very flat with no hills. The car was driven on mostly back roads at approximately 25 to 30 mph. After a few months we moved and the car was driven faster, now the problem was becoming very noticeable. As you accelerate the car hesitates and you have to push harder on the accelerator then the car jerks forward. The car was taken to the dealer several times for different adjustments and still the problem was there. Next I met with an Audi tech rep, who drove the car and said that was the nature of the beast. After more complaining they replaced the transmission module, this still did not fix. Now I have moved to an area that is hilly, and when you stop at a red light on a hill the car drifts back when you take your foot off the brake. The car has gone to a new dealer for another module and more adjustments and is still not fixed. This is a serious problem that other Audi A4 owners that I have spoken to have. Audi should have to fix this problem be for someone gets hurt. I thought I was getting a safe, well built, long lasting car, I guess I was wrong. With all of the other problem I have had with this car, I would never buy another Audi. I only hope that the other Audi A4 owners will take the time to pass on their problems with this dangerous transmission.

Automatic Transmission problem of the 2002 Audi A4 28

An accident occured in my 2002 Audi A4 with the new-for-2002 cvt transmission (continuously variable transmission) resulting from a condition that I believe is defective relating to the function of the transmission. After depressing the accelerator from a dead stop, there is a long lag between before the vehicle begins to move. As a result, in order to accelerate quickly in traffic, one must press the accelerator all the way to the floor in advance. This can cause serious problems if one must quickly stop, right after starting. In this case, my fiance accidentally hit the rear of the car in front of her at a light when they quickly stopped just after starting.

Engine check light had activated and vehicle would intermittently fail to accelerate when gas pedal was depressed. Although problem wa ssporadic, the same sequence of events occurred while driving in fast moving traffic, an effort to accelerate would cause engine to race up to 4 rpms. Immediately prior to switching from 3rd to 4th gear, the vehicle loses r. P. M. 's and power then catches and changes gears. It is only in this gear shift --3rd to 4th. I have contacted the manufacturer and they say it is within design parameters. I test drove other identical cars and this problem is not detected. It is dangerous to lose such power, especially at or around highway merge speeds.
